INTRODUCTION

This report covers the detailed explanation of measurement, evaluation and interpretation studies on the bathymetric, oceanographic, geological and geophysical survey those realized by MCH Marine Survey on behalf of Strandja Ecological Life Association within the context of CB005.2.12.085 Common Value Black sea-Let The World Breathe Project’s “Marine Measurement Operations”. The project site, İğneada, Demirkoy (Kırklareli) in Turkey.
Marine Studies and Underwater Engineering study was carried out at the location given in the figure 1. Seagrass meadows, one of the most important habitats for many marine creatures, provide essential ecological services. The community should therefore conserve seagrass beds as part of sustainable development efforts. Protecting these ecosystems requires an efficient and accurate monitoring system with information on seagrass distribution and relative abundance. Although side scan sonar systems (SSS) are highly effective in solving seagrass beds, post-processing methods are required to extract important data.
As most seagrass meadows grow on sandy seafloors, one way to distinguish seagrass meadows from sand beds is by the reflection patterns they give in sonar images.The side-scan sonar system could potentially be used to map other species such as Zostera caulescens seagrass and Posidonia, and seagrass meadows with longer shoots. The aim of this study is to quickly detect and map seagrass meadows and their relative abundance in real time using a side-scan sonar system.
